Seeing my cousin dress my husband-to-be. This is the first time they met, but you can see already the union of two families, both embracing their culture differences.

Seeing him in our traditional attire reminds me of "Intore," which means warrior. That was actually the name he was given at the gusaba ceremony. And indeed, Armin fights for us, for me, as a warrior.

I felt so alive in this outfit—pure representation of my Muslim, Rwandan, and European heritage.

These are Royal Cows—in Yambo, a cow breed that was exclusively dedicated to royal ceremonies during the times Rwanda was a monarchy. This was definitely the highlight of our traditional, gusaba wedding.

Whether you were Rwandan or not, you couldn’t help but enjoy the beat of the drums.

This image makes me think of my "village".. strong queens, supported by an army of kings in their lives. As they ushered me in, I felt such a great union.

Could our smiles get any bigger? We were celebrating the merging of our lives together.

Touching the cattle was exhilarating. Up close, they really feel like these unpredictable beasts. You know everything is going to be okay, but suddenly when you’re near them, you realize you’re encountering something wild and wonderous.

The traditional drummers really brought our wedding to life. From their beats to their attire, they truly cultivated a sense of culture which is exactly what we wanted for our wedding and our guests.

Watching the traditional dancers move their bodies and become this visual portrayal of art was so inspirational. I’m so grateful we could highlight this artistic and cultural expression at our wedding.

We kept to the African theme by asking our guests to bring out their African heritage and their interpretation of Africa through their fashion.

This setting had the kind of ambiance and feeling you imagine in storybooks. I loved all of the textures—the dirt ground and the rustic tables. It created the most immersive scene.

We used wooden plates, cups, cutlery, and candlestick holders, and it was so unique. I think this really made the table settings come to life. They brought texture and that authentic African feel.

As much as I’m a tomboy, I have always been a girly girl...my girls are a huge fundamental support in my life. They represent my wild and free side. I had 12 bridesmaids (10 nationalities), who flew in from 5 different continents to be with me.

This is one of those wedding shots I hope to show my great-grandchildren. It’s one of those heirloom treasures. This is something I envision hanging on my wall and years from now saying, “This was me as a new bride."

What bride wouldn’t love to pose next to a few zebras?! This was so fun!

This reminds me of how Armin and I see life, each drum has a different beat.

I look at this and just see peace. It was that moment before everyone took their seats and even though we’d set the scene for our ceremony, the river and setting seemed unspoiled.

It’s a shame that I didn’t linger around to take this in longer. The bridge we walked across as a couple had so much draping and dangling florals that it felt like I was walking in a fairytale. I loved all of the greenery and white flowers. It really made it feel whimsical!

I’ll always cherish this moment! The children’s choir from Tujatane School, which is a trust school for the local population by Tongabezi Lodge, sang at our ceremony. My eyes welled up because their voices and passion were incredibly moving. This was a personal highlight for me.

This moment was incredibly intimate. We stood on this island in the middle of the river, while our guests watched from a distance, and it really felt like it was just the two of us beginning the adventure of a lifetime. As much as we wanted the guests there, we also wanted this particular experience to be our own.

The set-up created a zen, warm, and intimate feeling. For our guests, it was a sense of belonging.

The fact that we could have one of our ceremonies on a tiny little island on a river in Zambia still blows my mind.

In this image, I asked Armin, “Are you sure you still want to do this because when I put a ring on it, it’s a done deal?” This image captures our relationship so well. We are life partners in all senses.

We’re ready to get the party started!

I love everything about this shot. There’s a lot of diversity, and everyone—while they wore the same color—really picked pieces that represented their style.

Victoria Falls provided the most amazing views!

I really wanted to encompass many different cultural elements for our wedding experience, and this was such a fun and laid-back brunch. Low tables and throw pillows made for the perfect atmosphere to celebrate Armin’s Persian heritage and my Arabic roots.

We all dressed the part for our Arabian, Middle Eastern-themed brunch and really got to get cozy and relax after an eventful couple of days!
54 of 55
Having an after-the-wedding day brunch was the best thing we could have done! It really gave us an opportunity to speak to each of our guests and let them know how grateful we were that they celebrated with us.

I love that we really embrace all parts of one another and celebrate the ways in which we’re different and yet the same.
