When Kate Pierce and Jeff Bender first matched on a dating app in the spring of 2023, a date didn’t immediately follow. In fact, their first conversation fizzled out entirely. “I had a concussion from pickleball when we were chatting,” Kate says. “I had to put the apps on hold while I recovered!” Two months later, the algorithms intervened again—this time on Bumble—and the pair finally met in person. Early dates exploring Philadelphia, hiking, and playing pickleball quickly proved the apps right.
After just over a year of dating, Jeff proposed over Labor Day weekend in Nonquitt, Massachusetts, Kate’s beloved summer community in South Dartmouth. The two went for a walk along the bluff overlooking the beach, a spot made even more meaningful by the fact that Jeff is famously afraid of heights. Kate had her suspicions about what might happen. “So as one does, I wore a Nap Dress and tennis necklace on a walk,” she jokes—and when Jeff got down on one knee, her sisters were secretly nearby capturing the moment. Back at the house, a dinner that had been presented as her father’s 80th birthday celebration turned out to be an engagement party in disguise, complete with Champagne, cake, and balloons.
For their June 7, 2025 wedding, Kate and Jeff chose a place that had long been woven into her family history: John’s Island Club in Vero Beach, Florida. Kate’s grandparents first visited the area in the 1970s, her parents honeymooned there, and it had become a gathering place for the Pierce family over the years. “It was the first real vacation Jeff and I took together,” she explains. “Seeing him there with my family just sealed the deal.” The destination setting also aligned with their priorities for the weekend. With loved ones spread across the country, the couple wanted time for everyone to reconnect beyond the wedding day itself.
Working with Anna Caroline Weddings, the pair envisioned a celebration that felt playful, colorful, and joyful. Kate describes her inspiration as a “maximalist fever dream,” drawing on everything from vintage wallpaper and Mediterranean seaside lounges to strawberry shortcake and the floral artistry of Natasja Sadi. Bright colors, pattern play, and movement defined the aesthetic—an energetic mood board that Anna translated into a cohesive and exuberant design.
Kate approached her wedding wardrobe with the same intentionality she brought to the celebration itself. She began the day getting ready in an eyelet Natalie Martin kaftan—a breezy choice that echoed the lace texture of her ceremony dress and felt fitting for a wedding by the water. For the ceremony, she wore Lihi Hod’s Desert Rose dress with a customized neckline, highlighting a delicate eyelash effect that better suited her. She completed the look with a shimmer veil by Kiera Elise and Loeffler Randall Carmen sandals with oversized bows, paired with polished hair by Ivy and Lace and makeup by Kate Blake Artistry.
Her jewelry carried deep personal meaning. Kate wore Mateo baroque pearl and green amethyst earrings, a nod both to her favorite color and to Jeff’s sea-green suit. For her "something old, borrowed, and blue," she wore an aquamarine ring that belonged to her maternal grandmother and two bands from her paternal grandmother’s fifty-year marriage.
The weekend was thoughtfully documented by photographer Ingrid Carney of Molliner Photography, with videographer Camden Claire capturing the celebration on film.
The ceremony took place beneath an oak canopy on the John’s Island golf course, with florals by Ellie’s Garden creating a vibrant focal point at the altar. Kate’s best friend, Taryn, officiated the service, weaving together stories of the couple’s relationship and their hopes for the future. Guests were seated to string trio arrangements—including a playful compromise for Jeff, whose beloved Philadelphia Eagles fight song was performed as guests arrived.
Following the ceremony, guests made their way to the Beach Club for cocktails overlooking the ocean before entering the reception tent, a Sperry structure from Palm Beach Event Company that Kate describes as “jaw-dropping.” Tablescapes layered colorful florals and lively patterns against the natural beauty of the seaside lawn, creating a setting that felt both lush and celebratory.
Music played a central role throughout the evening. The couple entered the reception to Billy Joel’s “Uptown Girl,” a lighthearted inside joke between them, before sharing their first dance to a slowed-down version of “Shut Up and Dance” by Walk the Moon. As the band transitioned into the song’s upbeat original, guests flooded the dance floor, instantly setting the tone for the night.
Later in the evening, Kate slipped into a sparkling second look by ILA Bridal—a disco-ball–inspired dress perfectly suited to the party atmosphere. When she and Jeff returned to the tent just as ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” began to play, the moment felt almost too perfect to plan.
By the end of the night, the dance floor was packed and the energy unmistakable. Jackets and ties were abandoned, rattan fans waved overhead, and the room pulsed with music from The Headliners Band. “Everyone was just having fun,” Kate recalls. “Hair was pulled up, people were sweating—it was the best sign that the party had truly taken off.”
The celebration continued briefly at the Beach Club bar before the newlyweds slipped away to enjoy a slice of their wedding cake together. Soon after, they embarked on a honeymoon that mirrored the adventurous spirit of their relationship: ten days in Africa, including a safari in South Africa and time on the beaches of Mozambique, followed by a few celebratory days in Paris for Bastille Day.
