Sophia India Gouraige and Connell Joseph McGill Jr. met for the first time at a friend’s birthday party in Tribeca. The two immediately clicked, and just a few days later, they had their first date at The Beekman.
Three years into their relationship Connell proposed in Martha’s Vineyard, where Sophia's parents first met. She said yes after Connell got down on one knee on the beach—his grandmother's emerald-cut ring in hand. “It was an incredibly beautiful moment that will forever hold a special place in my heart. Its sentimentality and sweetness overwhelmed me.” The proposal didn’t come without a few twists though—a misty sky set the scene, and a minor adventure involving a Jeep stuck in the sand only added to the day’s story.
Enter Palm Beach—the canvas for the bride’s tropical wedding vision. Her fondness for bright colors and bold prints made The Colony an obvious choice. “I aimed for a timeless and chic ambiance—elegant yet comfortable, with a clean, fresh aesthetic that blends formality with a beachy vibe and a touch of romance,” she notes.
And the date was set for March 23, 2024. Rackel Gehlsen headed all of the planning for the spring affair and the couple hired Merari Teruel to photograph the weekend's events. Floral designer Lewis Miller ensured the florals reflected the aesthetic, adding tropical green vines and ferns to the aisle and arch.
For the rehearsal dinner with a "Tropical Chic" dress code, Sophia embraced the attire instructions in a pink off-the-shoulder mini dress with Larroudésandals and Lele Sadoughi earrings. To top it all off she carried an Edie Parker clutch.
“My everyday wardrobe is inspired by Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy's timeless and chic fashion,” Sophia says. “I've always been drawn to minimalist elegance. . . and I wanted my wedding weekend to reflect those same qualities.” As the designer has a knack for impeccable slip dresses, Sophia went straight to Elizabeth Filmore’s New York City showroom to find the dress. “I trusted her team to create a simple, sophisticated, and timelessly elegant gown with a crown jewel overlay because I couldn't say no—it was beautiful, unique, and something different!”
On the wedding day, Timeshia Dattilo styled the bride’s hair into a polished low bun showcasing the bride’s Jennifer Behr Iris Pearl Earrings, while FaceTime Beauty applied a warm makeup look.
Sophia walked down the aisle arm-in-arm with her father as the notes of “Canon in D” rang out. “I felt incredibly grateful and joyful,” she remembers. “The moment had arrived at last! Surprisingly, I didn't feel anxious, but when we stood up to exchange our vows, tears started to stream down my face.” After sealing their vows, the newlyweds made their recessional to Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)."
The reception unfolded in the grand ballroom, where tables were dressed in textured ivory linens and blush floral arrangements. Sophia and Connell danced to Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together." Following a menu of refreshing fare and heartfelt speeches from the father of the bride, the maids of honor, and Connell’s best man, guests found themselves on the dance floor alongside Jordan Kahn Music Company. “The energy on the dance floor was incredible, and seeing everyone having such a great time together was my favorite part,” the bride reflects. As for the after-party, the disco fête was complete with glittering cowboy hats and The Colony's famed fried chicken sandwiches. AA Musicians spun tropical house tracks keeping the energy alive all evening. “It was absolute magic!”
