We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again: We feel like we’d be friends with Madeline Martha Mackenzie in Big Little Lies, the HBO show based on a novella by Liane Moriarty. Madeline’s witty and sassy but also caring and thoughtful. She’s a far cry from perfect, but her ability to speak her mind had us stanning hard for her ever since the pilot. It’s actually like that with all of the women in this award-winning series. In addition to Madeline, there’s Celeste (Nicole Kidman), Jane (Shailene Woodley), Bonnie (Zoe Kravitz) and Renata (Laura Dern). Each one has her own distinct personality and a subsequent style that speaks to it. Costume designer Alix Friedberg deservedly won an Emmy for her work on season 1.
Thankfully, she’s back for season 2. When we last left the ladies, Celeste’s abusive husband Perry (Alexander Skarsgård) had just died; the “big lie” had just been told; and “The Monterey Five” are quickly becoming the talk of the town. Each woman is coping with the intensity in her own way, and the stress of it all starts to take a toll. Friedberg plays this out in their wardrobes perfectly. Luckily, it’s not all end of days though. While season 1 boasted the fashion escapade that was the Audrey-Hepburn-meets-Elvis Presley masquerade party complete with unforgettable, hauntingly good karaoke performances by the parents, season 2 is slated to included a Studio 54-American Bandstand disco night in episode 4. Now all we want to know is what’s a girl gotta do to get a ticket?
