In anticipation of the Christmas Day premiere of Greta Gerwig’s adaption of Little Women (starring favorites Emma Watson, Timothée Chalamet, and Meryl Streep), the Serena Williams-backed, direct-to-consumer brand for the modern bride Floravere has designed a Jo March-inspired wedding dress called “J. March,” and it’s available for pre-order today!
Victorian era-esque while still as relevant as ever, the J. March is made of 100% silk double georgette with lace edge trim, romantic ruffles, and exaggerated sleeves for the kind of drama that Louisa May Alcott would loved to write about. Since this bridal label was founded with a mission of disrupting a somewhat dated industry, we can’t imagine a more perfect muse than the equally status-quo-breaking Jo.
The brand always names their designs after inspirational women and characters, like Meghan Markle, Frida Kahlo, Joni Mitchell, and the J. March is no different. Once it was announced there was going to be a reboot, the team jumped at making a new dress. “We revisited the book and started watching the trailer obsessively—the suspense is killing us!—to see how Gerwig [and costume designer Jacqueline Durran] chose to dress the characters and interpret the classic story,” founder Denise Jin says.
“As Little Women fans [Floravere’s last collection had a dress named the L.M. Alcott], we wanted to design a new gown inspired by this iconic work of art,” Jin remarks. “Even though Little Women was originally published in the 1860s, Louisa May Alcott’s themes of ‘women, ambition, art, and money’ feel more relevant than ever and resonate deeply with the reason why Floravere exists.”
A favorite quote of the team’s from the film is “I’m so sick of people saying that love is just all a woman is fit for. I’m so sick of it . . . ” And we 100% agree with that! “We like to say, as inspired by Alcott’s words, that you’re fit for so much more than just love,” Jin says. “But it sure looks good on you!”
When asked at what type of wedding they’d love to imagine the J. March in, they said, “Maybe it’s a small gathering, a bride in Vermont who is twirling and dancing barefoot, or an elopement among rolling fields and wildflowers.” And with those dramatic sleeves (the team’s favorite design element), who could resist a spin, twirl, or leap down the aisle or on the dance floor?
The limited-edition gown, available in sizes 0-14, can be accessorized with a J. March wicker boater hat too.
