There’s a lot of debate in the wedding world about whether or not a couple should have a videographer. One the one hand, it’s incredibly cool to have a video record of the day that you can eventually show your children. On the other, videographers—with their mics, lights, and other equipment—often have a large footprint and will, more likely than not, be noticeable to you and your guests. It’s a personal decision and you really have to weigh your options carefully. When I got married, I had a photographer friend who had been experimenting with an old Super 8 camera shoot our ceremony which really was the right decision for me. The Super 8 footage is somewhat grainy and old school, which I loved—it just feels nostalgic—and I still treasure what he created for us to this day.
Recently, I came across Ralph Lauren Women’s Fashion Editor Whitney Weeks’s wedding on Instagram and instantly fell in love. She and her husband, Doug Pickett—if you think you recognize him it’s because he was the face of Polo for about fifteen years—had a casually elegant event at Allen Farm in Martha’s Vineyard. The pictures are stunning and were featured on Vogue.com—but their wedding video is also beyond beautiful. “Having a videographer was, in retrospect, one of the best decisions we made,” says Whitney. “It was definitely an investment but so, so worth it. The video the guys at Blueberry Creative put together literally makes me well up every time I watch it.” Whitney doesn’t remember exactly how she stumbled across their work, but they’re based in North Carolina, where her husband is from, and had filmed several weddings on Martha’s Vineyard before so they knew their way around which was an added bonus. “They had a really great archive where I could watch weddings they had filmed in the past and get a feel for their style,” she explains. “They also offered a drone footage option, which seemed so intense at first but was an amazing element to have—it really added a sense of dimension and the feel of the location.”
As for that large footprint, it didn’t impact things at all. “On the day of the wedding, I barely noticed they were there,” she remembers. “But, they still managed to capture everything. Their questionnaire was also super thorough and helped them make a video that was very reflective of our personalities and our relationship. I couldn’t recommend them more, they really are the nicest guys.” Watch below—we guarantee you’ll finish it grinning from ear to ear.
