At the beginning of 2026, Vogue decreed that this would be "The Year of The Cabbage." From its vivid green hue to its superfood status, Vogue makes the argument that it deserves a place at every table. As fans of cabbageware, we couldn't agree more.

You've no doubt seen glimpses of a leafy plate here and there on Instagram posts from your favorite influencers, but cabbageware is not a trend. It's a timeless staple. These pieces are instantly whimsy, cheekily elegant, and simultaneously—excuse the pun—perpetually fresh. It's a truly evergreen tabletop style.

While there have been many different takes on cabbageware, the true original is Bordallo Pinheiro's. Founded in 1884 by visionary artist Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro, the brand has a long legacy of creating cheeky sculptural hand-painted earthenware. It makes sense—he himself was a subversive socialist who enjoyed making fun of society and dabbled in interior design, publishing, caricatures, and science.

But primarily, Pinheiro found joy in elevating tabletops. Strongly inspired by Portuguese culture, heritage, and nature, he turned to vegetables, flowers, insects, fish, and animals when crating earthenware. He sought to make his ceramics look just as much like them as possible. Nearly two hundred years later, shoppers are still drawn to his style.

But it wasn't until the 1960s that hostesses in Palm Beach began serving their guests with lettuce-inspired wares. Its place in the popular tabletop zeitgeist was solidifed in the June 1965 issue of Vogue showcased Genevieve and Nicholas du Pont's green majolica and a ceramic cabbageware at their Palm Beach home. Even Jackie Kennedy Onassis was known to set her table with cabbageware then.

Today, you can use cabbageware, too. It's the type of style that can layer with other pieces and accents, both for everyday and formal settings. These leafy plates are also great for year-round meals, making it welcome at dinners around Easter and Christmastime, too. Plus, part of Bordallo Pinheiro's cabbageware appeal is that these are dishwasher-safe. Who doesn't love a beautifully practical dish?
