On November 11, 2019—a rather fateful and auspicious 11-11, Dr. Robert Rongisch and Tim Zulawski's eyes first met in the midst of the Cologne Carnival festival, and it were as if the world stopped moving for a moment. That was the beginning of their relationship.
Travel is paramount to the couple, so naturally, Tim proposed during a trip to the Maldives in 2023 with the glowing sunset behind him. Robert gave him an enthusiastic "yes."
The wedding planning soon commenced, and they looked to their beloved South Africa for inspiration. Robert's family has a holiday home there, and they've spent so much special, cherished time in the locale. "The warmth of the people, the breathtaking landscapes, the incredible hospitality, and the outstanding cuisine make it our favorite destination—our home away from home," he explains. "It was only natural for us to celebrate such a meaningful moment in a place that brings us so much joy and comfort. Sharing this experience with our loved ones in a setting that means so much to us made it even more unforgettable."
They turned to the award-winning Cape Town destination wedding specialist Rebecca Glen, also known as The Wedding Fairy, to bring their dreams to life and Lauren Pretorius Photography and Orpen Film Co. to document every moment.
The grooms prioritized local blooms and sustainable practices, in line with the couple’s appreciation for nature and mindful living. The day's aesthetic would be grounded in the beauty of spring—think muted tones, natural textures, and sculptural floral compositions. They enlisted The Grand Botanist to arrange the flora for the occasion. Textural foliage of scabiosa, cosmos, delphiniums, and ornamental grasses dotted their ceremony's asymmetrical floral arch. The reception tablescape featured a sculptural meadow installation among the round tables.
The dress code of "formal summer attire" set the tone, and their guests arrived in an array of colors. "Inspired by the elegance of 'La Dolce Vita,' we chose Italian and Italian-inspired designers," Robert says. "I wore a white Gucci suit paired with delicate lace from Dolce & Gabbana, while my husband Tim opted for a pastel green double-breasted suit, custom-tailored by Giorgio Armani." For Tim and Robert, fashion is a form of self-expression, and their wedding looks were a true reflection of their personalities and the love they share. Each were sophisticated yet playful, classic yet modern. The family's make up and hair was styled by Yolande du Toit.
On January 8, 2025, their 37 nearest and dearest gathered in the Vrede en Lust garden grounds. With sweeping 360-degree views of vineyards and mountains, the setting was nothing short of magical.
The PLAY String Quartet set the tone as the couple walked hand in hand down the aisle, representing their unity and symbolizing their love. Since they had already legally married in their German hometown, they asked Tim’s sister Paulina to officiate this heartfelt ceremony that beautifully reflected their bond.
After, the newlyweds led their guests to the historic Cape Dutch Manor House and descended the grand staircase to the tune of Taylor Swift's "Love Story" and their friends and family's cheers. The reception began underneath the stars and was thoughtfully designed to feel just as warm and welcoming as a Sunday family meal with round tables, effortless conversation, and delectable food. The five-course dinner brought rounds of delicate canapés, freshly baked bread, bisque, handmade ravioli, aged beef fillet, seared Franschhoek trout, and baked cheesecake drizzled in caramel. Heartfelt toasts from Tim and Robert’s parents reflected on their childhoods, shared adventures, and the deep love that brought them together.
Tim’s sister and Robert’s best man Lukas took the time to publicly welcome each other into their new extended family. Just as the newlyweds took to the dance floor for their first dance to "At Last" by Etta James, sparkler machines illuminated the night sky, a surprise arranged by Tim’s sister.
The Starlight Band played the evening's soundtrack, and DJ N8N kept the party on their feet. seamlessly transitioned from serenading guests at the dinner table to setting the stage for an unforgettable night of celebration.
As the party drew closer and closer to two in the morning, the dancing never ceased. Even the waitstaff joined in on the conga line. For the final hours of revelry, guests journeyed to the Pool House at Vrede en Lust and gathered around the crackling fire pit beneath the stars.
The next morning, the wedding party enjoyed a leisurely breakfast to send the couple off to their Namibian honeymoon.
